to my ears the commercial 45 version sounds identical to the full cd/lp version from "broadcast" except the commercial 45 fades out to the 4:05 mark while the full cd version runs to 4:27.....so the entry should read "lp length" and not "lp mix"....the 45's faces does irroneously state the run time as 3:58.... Hi Ed,
The 45 was a remix by Shelly Yakus. Do you mean to tell me you have a 45 that is not the remix?? There are no albums that I know of that contain Mr. Yakus' superior 45 mix. |

my commercial 45 does state that the song is remixed by shelly yokus, but it sounds identical to the version from broadcast, except for the fade-out difference.........does your cd version sound DIFFERENT than the commercial 45??

i just listened to the 2 versions again (the commercial 45 versus the "broadcast" cd version) more closely and to my ears they ARE identical.....andrew...can you give me a point during the song where the remix difference is MOST noticible to your ears??

Well, it is a different mix, just not dramatically different. The drums have a slightly different sound and overall the mix is punchier. One audible element on the 45 remix is a prominent, repetitive high hat sound in the left channel throughout (particularly audible on the first chorus). This percussion effect is either mixed lower or not audible on the LP version. |

The 45 & the LP mix I own sound dramatically different to my ears.
So I just decided to download and compare some "Mockingbirds" on LimeWire to see what's out there... I found there are some longer versions of the Shelly Yakus single mix out there. So apparently Ed is also right! (Depending on what version of 'Broadcast' one owns. Thank you Ed for bringing this to light, because it is one of my favorite songs of all-time and I will definitely enjoy a longer version of the single mix!! Andy |

This doesn't surprise me, since there are other mixes and lengths for "I Just Died..." from Broadcast, too. According to the database, we never did clear that one up either. I'm going to bring the thread to the top of the board.

I just listened to the 45 vs. LP for Mockingbird again, and there's another easy way to tell the mix differences apart. During the intro about 3.5 seconds in, the 45 mix has an audible sound effect, sort of a whooshing rocket blast effect, as the snare drum kicks in. This effect is not present on the LP mix.
Could someone indicate if their CD contains the 45 mix in a longer version? It would be nice to get this mix on CD. |

Another way you can easily tell what mix you have is the original mix [non-Shelly Yakus] has somewhat of a musical "breakdown" on the fade around 4:14 whereas the long Yakus mix remains dense.
