Jim asked me to look into possible 45 vs LP differences for the song "Been To Canaan" by Carole King. I believe I hear strings in the background of the 45 from :41 to :47 that I do not hear on the LP but I would like to get other opinions on this before I claim a 45 version exists for this song. Thoughts?

At the very least, the strings are mixed up louder than on the LP version,
but it also sounds as though there are higher string notes that I can't hear on my LP (my reference LP is Her Greatest Hits). I would say it at least garners a "45 mix" reference. |

I finally had a chance to do an A/B comparison between the vinyl 45 of "Been to Canaan" that Pat shot out to me and Carole King's Her Greatest Hits CD (Ode/Epic/Legacy 65846). No question, I clearly hear the strings Pat is alluding to from :41 to :47 on the 45. I believe the strings are on the CD too, but they're buried way in the background to the point where they're practically inaudible. I tend to agree with Paul that the CD should warrant an "LP mix" comment.

Has anyone listened to "Been To Canaan" on the "Rhymes And Reasons" CD? Is it the same 'LP Mix' as the Greatest Hits?

LOL, guess I'll have to order the 45 for my own comparison.

I will also confirm the strings can be heard on the mono stock 45 (Ode 66031)

well.....i consider my ears to be pretty
good.....BUT....i just listened to the remastered greatest hits cd versus the vinyl 45 and they sound exactly the same to me during the alleged 0:41-0:47 period of the song that is supposed to be different........so i'm going to have to dissent and voice my disapproval of the 'lp mix' notation in the db.....i know it's just one man's opinion, except for todd's apprehension, but to me they are the same version....i have mentioned this before......with headphones on and when comparing a mono mix versus a stereo mix, the song WILL sound different and it's possible that some components of the song might sound as if they are not there....but, i believe it's because of the method of sound delivery; ie;stereo v mono, that is throwing people off....if the 45 was in stereo, it would sound more like the cd version.....so, in conclusion.....to me, this is one of those instances... |

I just A/B'd my stock 45 with the track from my promo copy of the Rhymes & Reasons LP (Ode 77016; a Monarch pressing) and IMO there's no question that the strings are missing from the LP track between :41 and :47.
At the :41 mark, the difference is noticeable between the words "mind" and "of." The strings that are easy to hear on the 45 can't be heard on either the left or the right channel of the vinyl LP. I compared using only the left channel in both channels, first, then only the right channel in both channels. No strings. If this were actually a stereo vs. mono situation, the strings would have to be present in at least one of the channels of the stereo LP. But they're not. The 45 definitely had some extra sweetening, thus making it sound a little less acoustically stark within the competitive top-40 marketplace. |
