More Dolly Parton

I had another thought about the above 45, which is clearly a different mix than the LP mix (which is the only mix on CD).

I always assumed that the single mix was for pop and country radio, but does anyone know if it was just for pop radio? Maybe that explains why all the CDs are just the album mix. The single mix is very poppy, and in the mid '80s, they could have made this mix just for pop radio stations. Does anyone know the story on this?

What did the original promo 45 (that was serviced to Country radio) sound like? Anyone here know?

As a current in 1985, we only played the Dave Thoener remixed 45 version of "Think About Love" on WDGY/Minneapolis, as did the folks upstairs at K102.

When the drum machine came in at :07, those beats just popped right out of the WDGY control room monitor speakers, as did the rest of the record. That was enough to convince me to buy the 45.

I finally heard the LP version for the first time not all that long ago. My reaction was "where'd the drums go?" It was very much like hearing the LP version of Badfinger's "Baby Blue" after knowing only the U.S. 45 mix.

Gordon, I really had to laugh at that description, because I used the same word in my initial draft, but decided to excise "wimpy" since there are those who no doubt prefer the LP version. But now that the cat's out of the bag, that's exactly how it should be put. :)

And that reminds me of another example: Now that stereo-happy oldies/classic hits stations have dumped the hit mono mix of the Four Seasons' "Rag Doll" in favor of the stereo mix, the powerful, heavily-reverbed and compressed percussion sounds that practically defined the hit mono mix instead sound like somebody tapping on a piece of waxed paper. Now *that's* wimpy!

No, not since you set the legal precedent with the Dolly case. :)

Now the waxed paper lobbyists are another matter altogether. They'll claim that I've singlehandedly sent their industry into a tailspin. Gonna have to watch my backside from now on. ;) ;)
