Since we're on the topic of Dolly Parton single mixes/versions, I thought I'd ask: Does anyone know if the single mix of Dolly's "Think About Love" is on any CD? I believe it was a top 5 country hit, though it never made the pop chart.

I had another thought about the above 45, which is clearly a different mix than the LP mix (which is the only mix on CD).

I always assumed that the single mix was for pop and country radio, but does anyone know if it was just for pop radio? Maybe that explains why all the CDs are just the album mix. The single mix is very poppy, and in the mid '80s, they could have made this mix just for pop radio stations. Does anyone know the story on this?

This 45 version was done for pop radio airplay. Mastered by
Randy Kling at The Music City Music Hall. No LP or CD
appearances I know of. Some country stations did play it.

What did the original promo 45 (that was serviced to Country radio) sound like? Anyone here know?

I heard the album version growing up on country radio stations.

As a current in 1985, we only played the Dave Thoener remixed 45 version of "Think About Love" on WDGY/Minneapolis, as did the folks upstairs at K102.

When the drum machine came in at :07, those beats just popped right out of the WDGY control room monitor speakers, as did the rest of the record. That was enough to convince me to buy the 45.

I finally heard the LP version for the first time not all that long ago. My reaction was "where'd the drums go?" It was very much like hearing the LP version of Badfinger's "Baby Blue" after knowing only the U.S. 45 mix.

Yah Shure, I had the same reaction when I finally heard the album mix - it was the 1st time I heard the song on CD, probably early-mid '90s, a total letdown. The drums are so wimpy on that version. And sadly, the single mix has never been released on CD anywhere in the world, which is a real shame. There was also an 8-song Dolly Parton LP and cassette released in 1985 called "Think About Love" and it has THE SINGLE MIX - which makes me wonder if this mix was also played on country radio, since all/most of the other songs on this album were country hits.

Gordon, I really had to laugh at that description, because I used the same word in my initial draft, but decided to excise "wimpy" since there are those who no doubt prefer the LP version. But now that the cat's out of the bag, that's exactly how it should be put. :)

And that reminds me of another example: Now that stereo-happy oldies/classic hits stations have dumped the hit mono mix of the Four Seasons' "Rag Doll" in favor of the stereo mix, the powerful, heavily-reverbed and compressed percussion sounds that practically defined the hit mono mix instead sound like somebody tapping on a piece of waxed paper. Now *that's* wimpy!

And you're not worried about insulting those who favor the stereo mix? :)

No, not since you set the legal precedent with the Dolly case. :)

Now the waxed paper lobbyists are another matter altogether. They'll claim that I've singlehandedly sent their industry into a tailspin. Gonna have to watch my backside from now on. ;) ;)

At WJSQ 101.7 and 1450 WLAR in Athens, the pop remix was
played. WSM-FM opted to play it as well as WIVK FM 107.7 in
Knoxville.

Kent, were these 3 stations country stations, pop stations, or AC?

All of the above are Country formatted stations. There is one CD which may have the Thoener remix of this track. It is "The Love Album", an old West German import on RCA. According to TM Century, this CD has the Thoener remix. There is a CD issue of this.

If country stations were playing the remix, there's at least a good shot that RCA will eventually release this on a Dolly compilation CD. This was a #1 country hit, and if many country stations were playing it, there's a very good reason of releasing this version. If only pop stations played it, where it absolutely didn't chart at all, there's probably not as much a reason. I'll look into this "Love Album" CD. Kent, is this a Dolly CD or a various artist CD that RCA put out?

Actually, I just checked Amazon. They list a Dolly Parton CD "The Love Album" and another Dolly Parton CD "The Love Album Vol. 2" and they have track listings for both albums, but neither contains "Think About Love". Like you said, both are old, import CDs (from 1989 and 1990, respectively.) Kent, is it possible you were thinking of a different Dolly single that was remixed (like Real Love)? (On the other hand, "Think About Love" WAS remixed by David Thoener!)

Somehow, I'd like to think Amazon made a mistake with the track listing, but they show both album covers, too, and both list the titles there, and neither say "Think About Love".

I was apparently thinking Real Love. RCA needs to re-issue Greatest Hits with the original uncut LP and some bonus tracks. Think About Love in the Thoener Remix would be perfect here.

Actually, after I theorized that you were thinking "Real Love", I checked the track listing for both "Love Albums" (vol. 1 & 2), and "Real Love" isn't on either volume. So now I'm really confused. And there probably aren't many Thoener remixes. Do you know if you saw "Think About Love" with the Thoener mix on something?

I really goofed this one. I consulted my notes and it was
on an RCA Special Products Dolly Parton CD. I have ordered
a copy of this disc and will post about what version of
"Think About Me" is on it and further details.

I think I've checked all the RCA Special Products Dolly Parton CDs with this song and none had the Thoener single remix. (Actually, there's a THIRD mix - we haven't talked about that one. Some CDs had that mix.)

Which CD did you order?

<I consulted my notes and it was

If your notes indicate it was on this CD, that begs the question - where did you read that the single mix was on this CD? Since you haven't gotten the CD yet and actually heard it, I assume you came to this conclusion because you read it somewhere or somebody personally told you the single mix is on this CD.

BTW, does anyone know where the third "Think About Love" mix comes from? As I recall, it's a little closer to the single mix than the album mix, but still not the real deal and not close enough. Both those non-single mixes clock in around 3:25, while the Thoener single mix clocks in at 3:17. If anyone has CDs that have the song clocking in around 3:25, it won't be the single mix because it never faded out that late.

The song is listed on this Special Products disc. Don't
know which mix is on it. Wonder if it's the original album
mix or the Third one. I was referring to the song being
available on that disc with no knowledge of the mix on that
disc. Still looking for the Thoener pop mix in some form.
Will most likely need to locate a 45 single and transfer
it.

Good question, Gordon. John sent me a dub he'd found that matches your description. To me, it sounds like someone's home-brew attempt to replicate the 45 using the LP mix. Like the 45, the keyboards during the intro are more isolated and upfront than on the LP mix, but once the drums kick in, the piano shifts abruptly from center to hard left... not at all natural-sounding. The keyboards are centered throughout the intro on both the 45 and LP (or at least of what little you can hear of them on the LP.)

And, as on the LP version, the extra percussion during the 45's second chorus is also missing from the "third mix." Nor is the overall mix as dense as the Thoener remix.

I have a theory about where the 3rd mix of "Think About Love" might come from. Check out this link:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Think_About_Love

There was an 8-song LP (and cassette) released in 1986, containing 5 remixed songs. The album is titled 'Think About Love' and, of course, the song is on there. Maybe this is where the weird "third" mix comes from! I've known about this LP for a few years but always assumed the remix that was on this was the single mix. It does seem like some hands-on work was done to create the mixes on this release, so maybe this is the origin of this mix.

The third version is on CD, "Love Songs" on RCA Legacy. Sound quality is excellent.
