Thanks for the tip about the Spun Gold reissue pressing.
I'll try hunting down a copy.

I agree it does sound much better and you did a great job. Sadly you are only as good as the source it comes from and its better than not having anything.

It sucks when the LP version sounds great and gets the remastering and the 45 never gets to CD. So frustrating!

According to Aaron the distortion is there. I hear it slightly even on Mark's copy (and that says something about how crappy the 45 source was). It is what it is.

A couple weeks ago, I finally found a CD source for the 45 version of "Shakedown Cruise." It's on a WEA v/a compilation called Memory Time Folge (Volume) 15, 1978-80. This is a German CD with 20 tracks and has a nice sampling of hits, all from master tape source.

As far as the other tracks go, there doesn't appear to any other elusive 45 versions. "Give Me The Night" by George Benson is the same 3:40 early fade of the LP version. "Hot Legs" is the same 4:13 "neither" version that has shown up on other CDs.

Does a good transfer of the LP version
exist digitally?

I have the reissue on Collector's Choice, which I'm pretty sure is from tape source, if that's what you mean.

I'm pretty sure the 4:12 LP version sounds great. Never had an issue listening to it.

I'm happy to know that the Collector's Choice dub sounds
good.

When the song was a hit, the TM 'Stereo Rock' format
played an interesting special edit of the LP and single
mixes. I can't remember the edit points; If I can find
an old aircheck of it I may attempt it...

I wouldn't be surprised if they made a special version of
it because of the pressing qualities of the 45. The
'Stereo Rock' format paid amazing attention to sound
quality for mid 70s radio programming.

I'm referring to the Rhino release on Rhino Hi-Five :Jay Ferguson. That is my go to version for the LP.
