I recall hearing this version back when:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDB_DGCGuAk But, on numerous compilations released since 1985 from both artists that contain this song, this version is used: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZ7qTLRdYTw The difference that I hear is minor - in the second verse around 2:35, Kenny sings "You know I love you too" differently. On the album version, "too" is stretched into two notes versus one on the 45. Is there anything else different between these versions that I am not hearing? And, of course, I must ask why two versions were released. |

Could they have just dubbed the vocal from the first swipe
of the chorus? I actually like that album version better but I do remember the 45. Quite often labels will redo the vocals upon release of a single. If you really listen to this song it's really an R&B tune. Edited by AutumnAarilyn |

One thing I noticed was the timing of the second chorus. The "You know I love you too" part.
On the first link it shows up at 2:35 as mentioned by Scanner. On the second link it is nearer to 2:25. So, I guess there's some changes in the early parts of the song that are different too. |

I wonder sometimes when it comes time to include a
previously released song on a new record (compilation, re- release, etc.) whether someone at the record company inadvertently pulls an alternate take, includes this version on the new album and the "new" version becomes the version that is widely available. Take this song - just speculating, but did someone at RCA pull another version when this song was added to a Parton or Rogers compilation or made available for digital purchase or streaming and this is now the version that everyone thinks is the original. If Kenny did not record two takes of the song, someone then edited the second chorus to sound like the first on the 45. Just the type of mystery that keeps this board going! :-) |

There's some conflating of issues that may not be
apparent at first glance. The first link has 10 seconds before the needle is dropped so the vocal phrase will appear 10 seconds later. Nobody really pulled the wrong tape at RCA for this difference. On the album, one version was cut originally and then when the single was made they pasted what sounds like the vocals from the first pass of the chorus. Keep in mind this was done in 1985 and not some pulling for a greatest hits decades later. There's some parallels here with the discussions we had about Dan Seals' "Bop" and even the recent "Superfreak" thread where there was a successful dubbing of one line. When Earth, Wind, and Fire did their rhythm guitar, it was dubbed so that there wouldn't be alternate phrasing and little deviations on a part that would be repeated and almost used to keep time. When they brought Kenny in he probably did several vocals for each line. Artists don't really sung the song in complete takes. Considering this a duet more has to be "pieced" together. If you watch the video of the making of "We are the World", that's pretty much how much vocals get recorded. It looks segmented because there are so many different singers but many songs especially pop ones go down in that fashion. When Kenny and Dolly sung in unison on this and "Islands in the stream", I thought Kenny always got turned down a bit but Dolly would stand out against anyone when singing a phrase together. That's just too easy! I didn't pay any attention to that intro, and totally explains it. I was probably thinking the ad before the song was still running. |
