I see what both of you are saying. Consider Foghat's "Slow Ride", though. The 45 runs roughly (3:55), the LP runs roughly (8:12)--give or take a second or two. Unless I'm missing something (and I certainly could be), there's no real discernable edit in the 45--it just fades much, much earlier than the LP. Granted, we're talking about a four-plus minute difference in time (as opposed to the 40-41 seconds in "We Are The World"), but the same priniciple applies.

I don't have a problem either way.

If nothing else is chopped off the beginning or middle of the 45 length of "Slow Ride," I'd also call that a "length" instead of version. It's like EdisonLite says--it makes it easy for us "editors" to determine if we need to match edits or just fade early when making our own 45 length/version.

In the unlikely event that you can find the We Are The World CD (Polygram 824822), which has the full LP length, you can recreate the 45 fade as follows:

Add a 12-beat sinusoidal fade from the snare at 6:13.3, just before the downbeat, to the snare at 6:23.2, just before the line "so let's start giving".
