My commercial 45, which is stereo, has a listed time of (3:37), but an actual time of (3:33).

I was just reading a review on Amazon for his "Complete Greatest
Hits" CD and the review stated that the compilation uses the single mix for Sundown which apparently differs from the LP version. This is news to me. How does the single differ from the album? Edited by RichM921 |

The single mix has a more
pronounced time-delayed reverb on the drums & the lead guitar is mixed a little louder. Andy |

All Gordon Lightfoot CD comps except the last one have a
remix of "Sundown". Many times, "Single Version" is on the CD because that's the way it appears on the master tape box. |

So what is the story with this one, exactly? The database indicates no different versions at all. Is the "remix" the actual single version or an alternate version? That would seem quite odd, if what Hits Man says is true, that all versions on CD (except the last listing) is not the single or album version, but a remix.

The versions released on CD before 'Complete Greatest Hits' was released sure sound exactly like the mix on my vinyl LP 'Sundown'.
The version on 'Complete Greatest Hits' sounds like the 45 mix. It is not a drastic difference, but the 45 is a "better" mix. Andy |

The double disc set "Easy 70s" also has the 45 mix, so Pat may want to update the database. The difference in reverb is subtle to my ears, but when doing a comparison, the single does have a more time-delayed reverb on the drums.

I'm still surprised to learn that the 45 and LP versions were mixed differently, 40 years after the song came out.
LP mix My preferred version for the LP mix is Time-Life's Sounds Of The Seventies Vol. 15 1974 Take Two (1991), where it sounds superb. Excellent dynamic range, great EQ, and not a hint of NR on the fade. It runs 3:32 here. The same analog transfer is used for:
The version on Razor & Tie's 2-CD Easy '70s (1993) runs about 0.7% too fast, has great dynamic range and nice EQ, but also has a tape azimuth alignment error that makes the track sound warbly when summed to mono. Much better is Complete Greatest Hits, where it runs at the correct speed, has great dynamic range, nice EQ, and has no sum-to-mono issues. It runs 3:37 here. Edited by crapfromthepast |

There's a lot of crap on the radio, but there's only one Crap From The Past.
