I guess I'm like Roscoe--I'm confused as well.
In the old site, there was an "errata" section that mentioned (probably based on this original thread) that all CDs with the 45 version of "I Can't Go For That" are not the 45 version--they are edits of the LP version but the actual commercial 45 was an edit of the 12" single. Is that indeed the case? |

That's interesting new information. I've never seen the DJ copy of the 45; however, I can tell you this much. The commercial 45 does NOT state anything about a club mix. I have both the US and UK version of the 45, and they are BOTH the same edit of the 12" mix. The version that has appeared on CD time & time again is an edit of the LP version. I thought this edit first appeared on Hall & Oates Rock 'n' Soul Pt. 1: Greatest Hits; however it has also apparently made an appearance on the original DJ 45.
My conclusion: The 45 version has never made an appearance on CD. All versions that run (3:39) are the DJ edit. |

Hi
Just had to add this for fun - I think i have the 45 version on a CD but I have no 45 to compare it to anymore. I compared it to the short edit on Rock N Soul and it is a different mix. It's on a 1991 CD that does not qualify fot the database because it was a record club issue. i only recently learned what the bmg-direct logo means) "The Very Best Of Hall & Oates" DMC1-1005. It's a 14 track disc that nicely rounded up stuff that was omitted from Rock N Soul. Found it in a used bin back then. Anyway this one runs about 3:51, so it seems to be the 45. |

Hi
Well, amazing as it is, I think I do not have the 45, but the LP mix edited to 3:50. Last nite Dave C. sent me the 12" mix. I got rid of my 12" and 45 years ago, because i didn't remember them being that different. Funny, now that i hear it again, I remember this mix - and i can hear how different it is. The vocal is much more up front, and the drum track is mixed differently. I only gave a quick listen to the cd, i was likely fooled by the brighter eq on the SP disc. When i hae time, i'll compare them properly (matching their EQ and do an a/b..) But if the 45 was erally an edit of this 12" mix, then SP disc ain't it. -Mark M |

The 45 really IS an edit of the 12" mix. I matched the edits and made my own 45 version several years ago. At the time, I found the 12" mix on a now-out-of-print compilation on Buddha/BMG. It's currently available on the remastered edition of the full-length album. There are several edits, especially on the intro and at the end.
And you're correct Mark, it's considerably different---vocals have lots of reverb (and no channel delay like the LP vocals) and there's added instrumentation in addition to the remixing on existing instruments. |

I was able to recreate the 45 using the 12" version. Don't remember the edit points offhand, though. |
