Hits recorded in Spanish

Okay, here we go: I've confirmed the existence of Spanish-language versions of the following. So far, they are only the ones that were issued in some form or another here in the U.S. However, I do intend to eventually add the foreign-only releases as well, once additional research proves that's the only way certain titles exist. This is still very much a work in progress, but I must thank cftp up front for his extensive lists (see the "Do That To Me One More Time" thread), and EdisonLite for launching this new thread during my absence over the last five weeks. (When I first started this project last Fall, I thought the list would be about 30-40 titles at most, so this has now officially grown much bigger than I'd initially anticipated!) For my own purposes, I'm limiting my listings to only the '70s & '80s (will probably eventually add the '90s as well), and while not sticking to just top 40 hits, I will draw the line at CHART hits. :-) They are organized by category, and then listed chronologically within that category. Dates given are all based on Pat's methodology of peak popularity, where applicable (as a few on the list below did miss the top 40) - songs may have actually been recorded & released the year prior. All 45s & 12" singles do exist as commercial copies w/ a B-side, not just as double-sided promos! Spanish wording for the titles is exactly as printed on the U.S. records; my research sometimes showed that import copies of the same recordings actually had different Spanish wording, as there is usually more than one way to translate English to Spanish. If the Spanish-language version is available on CD, all known U.S. CDs are listed (many not in Pat's database at this time); promo CD singles are only referenced if no known commercial CDs exist. If no known domestic CDs could be found, then I've listed at least one import as an option, where known. Picture sleeves & other unusual facts are all noted as well. I realize that at this time, this is essentially just a more detailed list of various titles that I (and other board members) have already mentioned, but hopefully other fans/collectors will find some good info here (okay, not that I think there are a lot of collectors of Andy Williams & Perry Como around here, but hey, "(Where Do I Begin) Love Story" and "And I Love You So" were BOTH top 40 hits!)...

Well, it took me a little over a year, but I just acquired the above CD. I'd definitely like to thank cftp for the tip, as prior to his post, I did not know this collection existed! Thought I'd go ahead and give the full scoop, for those who may be interested - and hopefully db purposes as well, if we're being completists... :-)

Yes, Stars in Spanish is actually a U.S. CD from 1995, on Polydor 314 525 734-2, although it's long out-of-print. It has 13 tracks, 11 of which were top 40 hits in their English form, and are shown below in bold (the Zucchero and Sting songs being the only exceptions). Here are the complete contents, which I've elected to list chronologically; dates are peak years as given in Pat's on-line db (where applicable), and all timings that I've given are ACTUAL (surprise - printed times in the front booklet are quite off for some!):

W/ only two or three exceptions, I'd never heard most of these versions before. Personally, I was most anxious to hear "Let's Get Serious", since it's a classic jam from my childhood, and it's great to have "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da" as well, as it's from the same era. I also have to say how impressed I was w/ Justin Hayward on "Nights in White Satin" - w/ the song being just as old as I am (going back to the original release), it's definitely on the fringe of the earliest stuff that I collect, but there's no question it's classic, in English or Spanish!

I also noticed that the U.S. CD of David Lee Roth's Sonrisa Salvaje is apparently back in print, so I ordered one, and it just arrived a few days ago. As detailed in my post from 13 May 2014 above, it's a 2007 re-issue of his Spanish-language album from 1986, on Friday Music FRM-1053, although I noticed that my copy has an "RE-1" in the matrix no. in the center ring. It includes the Spanish-language version of "Yankee Rose", which is track 1. If Pat wishes to add it immediately, I can report that it has an actual time of (3:45). Will post this info in the proper "Yankee Rose" thread as well...

Oh, and while they both missed the top 40, Sonrisa Salvaje also features Spanish-language versions of DLR's two follow-ups: "Goin' Crazy!" ("Loco del Calor!"), which is track 5, and has an actual time of (3:06), as well as "That's Life" ("Asi es la Vida"), which is track 10, and has an actual time of (2:44)...

What about the ultimate,hits that were US hits recorded in Spanish (though the English language translation appears on side B)

Well, thanks to some additional research as well as patience, it seems I sorta got my wish. :-) In the last few months, I've discovered at least TWO additional V/A CD compilations devoted entirely to Spanish-language versions of hits! Both consist of a combination of recordings by the original artist that had the hit English-language version in the U.S., as well as covers by other acts. However, both are imports, so unlike Polydor 314 525 734-2 (described in detail above in my previous post), they're ineligible for inclusion in Pat's on-line db. I've recently acquired copies of both CDs, and thought I'd go ahead and post full details here, for others who may also be interested - especially since BOTH include some versions by the original artists that have NOT been previously mentioned in either this thread or the one for "Do That To Me One More Time"!

Interestingly, the first one is from Mexico, and also titled Stars in Spanish, but is NOT to be confused w/ the previously-discussed U.S. release of the same name on Polydor 314 525 734-2 (although they do actually share three of the same songs). It's on SGB Records CDID 7378, from 2007, and features 19 tracks. The back insert features the "HECHO EN MEXICO" ("MADE IN MEXICO") logo, but also states "Printed in USA" in the fine print, as well as on the CD itself; the label (SGB Records) has a Los Angeles address, and claims to be manufactured & distributed by UMVD. (And indeed, most of the recordings by the original acts on this CD are ones on labels that are currently under the Universal umbrella.) However, it appears this may very well be a "gray area" CD...

It features the following eight top 40 hits sung in Spanish by the ORIGINAL artists - and like before, I've chosen to list them chronologically, w/ the dates being the peak years as given in Pat's on-line db, and the timings being ACTUAL:

"Wind of Change", "(Everything I Do) I Do it for You", and "Bed of Roses" are the three that also appear on the U.S. CD of the same name from Polydor, and all w/ nearly identical timings. However, Spanish-language versions of both "The Lady in Red" by Chris DeBurgh and "This Ain't a Love Song" by Bon Jovi have NOT been mentioned here on Pat's chat board before, and I admit that I didn't know about either of those myself before picking up this CD! If you've never heard them before, here they are on YouTube: CHRIS DeBURGH - "The Lady in Red" (Spanish-language version) (3:09) BON JOVI - "This Ain't a Love Song" (Spanish-language version) (5:06) Although it was released on a vinyl 45 (w/ a picture sleeve) in Spain, I have yet to find any evidence that the Spanish-language version of the Chris DeBurgh song was issued here in the U.S. in any form. Nine of the 10 remaining songs on the CD are covers of other huge U.S. hits from the '60s through '90s sung in Spanish by no-name acts, such as "Yesterday" (1965), "Love Hurts" (1976), "Total Eclipse of the Heart" (1983), and "I Will Always Love You" (1993), among others; the last is a Megamix of quite a few of the songs found on the disc. The other CD is from Spain, and titled Cantando en Espanol (Sung in Spanish). It's on EMI PE 0-2, from 1992, and features 18 tracks. (Most of the recordings are indeed by EMI/Capitol acts.) And yes, this one is most definitely legit (i.e., NOT a "gray area" CD)...

It features the following four top 40 hits sung in Spanish by the ORIGINAL artists - and again, this is a chronological listing, w/ the dates being the peak years as given in Pat's on-line db, and the timings being ACTUAL:

1959 RITCHIE VALENS - "La Bamba" (2:02) (okay, the hit in the U.S. WAS this all-Spanish version)
1969 OLIVER - "Jean" (3:15)
1980 KIM CARNES - "Mas Amor" ("More Love") (3:30)
1981 KOOL & THE GANG - "Celebremos" ("Celebration") (5:13)

It also includes these six songs sung in Spanish by various U.S. hit-making acts, although the English versions were not top 40 hits - or if they were, they were by other artists:

MATT MONRO - "Alguien Canto" ("The Music Played") (3:18)
BOBBIE GENTRY - "No Me Quiero en Amorar" ("I'll Never Fall in Love Again") (2:47) (cover of 1970 hit by Dionne Warwick)
EYDIE GORME - "Dime" ("Feelings") (3:43) (cover of 1975 hit by Morris Albert, who also recorded it in Spanish)
ASTRUD GILBERTO - "Solo el Fin" ("For All We Know") (3:14) (cover of 1971 hit by the Carpenters)
CONNIE FRANCIS - "Siboney" (2:51)
CHRIS MONTEZ - "No, No, No" (2:14)

The Spanish-language versions of both "Jean" by Oliver and "More Love" by Kim Carnes have yet to appear on a U.S. CD; in fact, the existence of the former has never even been mentioned previously here on Pat's chat board. So if you've never heard it before, I found a single posting of it on YouTube: OLIVER - "Jean" (Spanish-language version) (3:18) It was issued on a vinyl 45 (w/ picture sleeve) in Spain, but I've yet to uncover any evidence that it was ever released here in the U.S., in any form. In fact, that same Spanish 45 actually featured "Buenos Dias Brillo de Estrellas" on the flip side - i.e., the Spanish-language version of his other big 1969 hit, "Good Morning Starshine". Okay, now done - since it turns out it's existed on an import CD since at least 1992 (24 years)! I've always been a huge fan of KC (saw her in concert back in the late '80s), and her hit cover of "More Love" is among my top two or three favorite songs of hers; it was fascinating to hear that Spanish-language version for the first time just a few weeks ago (never owned the vinyl 45, like you). But I did you even one better - er, make that TWO. :-) I was able to obtain second copies of BOTH import CDs that I just described above, and on Friday, I mailed you a package w/ those actual CDs, so look for it in your mailbox either tomorrow (Monday) or Tuesday.
