Here's a video on YouTube - Special Single Remix.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ObN3-9JV294

I checked the 45 at 45cat and no indication of a remix on
the label.

It's hard to discern a difference. If there is one it's
perhaps the added reverb.

There's a drastic EQ/volume difference between the Greatest Hits disc and the earlier masterings. GH is about 6 dB louder than Fore, and compresses/limits the peaks on top of that.

Both have a whole lot of reverb on the lead vocals (listen around 0:15-0:17).

I don't hear any mix differences.
There's a lot of crap on the radio, but there's only one Crap From The Past.

The CDs all sound like different
masterings of the LP mix to me. One of
these days I'm going to have to dub my
promo 12" and my promo 7" and to get
to the bottom of this!

It runs about 0.2% faster than the version I've been playing, and like CFTP said, I hear (and see) much compression, limiting, and a brighter eq... but I have to question if any of these were on the original 7" single.

The fade point and length is identical, and once it's at the right speed they very nearly cancel each other out. I don't hear any instruments added or subtracted on either mix, even when playing the mono folddown of one in the left channel and the mono folddown of the other in the right channel.

Like others have said: I'm not convinced it's an independent mix.

Does anyone out there have a needledrop of the actual
commercial 45?

I'm going to pull out my original LP vinyl and try to
dub it also.

Just took the time to transfer all my versions of
"Jacob's Ladder" to my editing software (Sound Forge).
This is my favorite of all of Huey's hits.

The vinyl promo 12" labeled 'Special Radio Remix' is
the same as the promo 45 (which is unlabeled).

The vinyl LP is the same mix as the 'Fore' CD and the
'Greatest Hits' CD (which is labeled, inaccurately,
'single remix').

There is very little difference between the two mixes.
Most noticeable is the opening keyboard melody line is
a tad louder on the promo 12"/promo 7" compared to the
LP mix. Even that is hard to distinguish!

One thing that makes it easier to tell the mixes apart
is removing the center channel information in the
tracks. The vinyl LP & the two CDs have a very audible
flange effect two seconds into the song when removing
the center channel info - the promo
12" & promo 45 do not have this flange effect when
removing the center channel info.

I still haven't heard a dub of the actual commercial
single so I don't know if it's the same as the promos.

Andy

Edited to add - Even if the commercial single is
identical to the two promos, I don't think anybody
should spend any major time hunting it down as the
difference is so negligible it doesn't need to be
noted in the database.
