FYI, Just did a comparison between a vinyl copy of this song and the version on Arista's Perfect 10, and have concluded the 45 cannot be recreated from the CD version. There seems to be parts on 45 not on CD.

LOL, on second thought, after listening to the vinyl dub again, I realized there's no Michael on it. The instrumental parts I thought that were on the 45, and not on the CD, were actually where Michael would sing.
What did they call those 45's... Dub versions, or something? |

I didn't realize that this was Jermaine's biggest CHR airplay hit until just now. It was his only CHR top 10, reaching #6 in R&R in June of 1984. The question is, what was the source for radio stations?
The vocal version was the b-side of "Do What You Do," and I didn't think that record had yet been released. The dub version that John references above was on the b-side of "Dynamite," which peaked in September of '84 in R&R. "Do What You Do" peaked in December of '84. As far as the vocal version on the 45 goes, it has a printed time of 4:03 and an actual time of 4:18. I don't currently have a CD copy to compare with. |

To John & Aaron,
I hope I am answering your questions (albeit in a roundabout way). There was no commercial 45 when TMIND was released to radio. There WAS a promo 12" [Arista ADP-9189] of TMIND issued to radio a coupla weeks before the self-titled album came out. This was not yet a common practice, but Arista did not have the clearance from Epic to release it commercially as a single (but they knew it was an obvious hit). So Arista worked it as an album cut up the R&R charts as the first emphasis track (although that term had not been coined yet). Andy |

Thanks, Andy! Great info! Is the promo 12" version any different than the album version?

To Aaron:
It was the same version (although the 12-inch promo had better fidelity as the album was narrow-grooved). Andy |

I looked for this in the database and found nothing. So is the 45 version with
Michael vocals in it? Is it available in any CD? |

This song appears on Jermaine's Playlist: The Very Best Of CD release. It is the duet vocal version and runs 4:24.

That's because it never charted on Billboard's Hot 100 and was never released as a single. Edited by PopArchivist |
