Organizing my 1976 songs, I've noticed that John
Sebastian's 1976 hit seems to be variously titled "Welcome Back" or "Welcome Back Kotter." Was this a first versus subsequent pressings thing? Just curious about how to "correctly" title my .flac file. TIA |

It all comes down to whether you want to go with the original "Welcome Back Kotter" or the more common "Welcome Back" title. DJ 45s all went out under the former, while stocks exist under either, but more commonly, the latter. As a recording, the re-titled "Welcome Back" makes more sense, since "Kotter" is never mentioned.

My commercial copy is titled "Welcome Back Kotter". I bought it very early in its chart run.

For what it's worth, from the time I started following pop stuff in 1978, I never once heard the song referred to as "Welcome Back Kotter", just "Welcome Back".
I found just two distinct analog transfers for "Welcome Back". They both sound pretty similar, and both sound pretty good. Nice dynamic range, nice EQ, and no evidence of noise reduction. Nice, long fade with a little hiss at the end - just how I like it. The first one is on Time-Life's Sounds Of The Seventies Vol. 4 1976 (1989). The same analog transfer is used for:

There's a lot of crap on the radio, but there's only one Crap From The Past.

I remember getting in an argument with a neighbor kid back in 1976 over the correct title of this song. My commercial 45 and all of the radio DJs referred to the song as "Welcome Back" while my friend insisted that the song was titled "Welcome Back, Kotter". Sure enough, he produced his commercial 45 that showed the longer title! As a novice 10 year-old record collector, it was one of the first cases that I can remember where there were two different 45 pressings.
