WOW! There are THREE versions of "Kiss Me Deadly!" I just compared the promo 45 versions with the "Single Version" on one side and "LP Version" on the flip side. The "Single Version" on the promo 45 has the lyrics "I didn't get made," while the flip side (LP Version) has "I didn't get laid."
I haven't done a thorough comparison of the remainder of the song, but that's enough evidence to suggest three versions! Given that it says "Single Version," were there any commercial singles, vinyl or cassette, that have "I didn't get made," instead of "laid?" |

The "Special Radio Version" also changes the lyrics "I had a few beers / gettin' high" to "I had a few beers / gettin' wild." I had never noticed this until now.

Anybody willing to guess which version was played most on top 40 radio across the United States?
It seems like I heard "made" before I heard "laid," but I don't remember of most stations switched over to "laid" or if it was just rock stations that played that version in later years. Does anybody remember the "get a break" version getting airplay? I don't remember having heard that version EVER! |

The "didn't get a break" version got played here. I'm
pretty sure "American Top 40" also played that version. I've got a Canadian promo 45 with "break" on one side and "laid" on the other. |

What are the three different versions? I thought there are two only?
My guess is most stations played the "uncensored" version, while the "Special Radio Version" was specifically created for the Bible Belt. These lyrics are tame, even by 1988 standards. Probably the main reason the single did not go Top 10, while her duet with Ozzy did go Top 10... one of the worst songs ever recorded. That song is just unlistenable. |

The three versions are:
1) LP/45 version (with lyric "didn't get laid") 2) "Single Version" (as it is labeled on the promo 45; with lyric "didn't get made") 3) "Special Radio Version" (with lyric "didn't get a break") I'd guess that the LP version got the most airplay, and I agree that the lyrics are pretty tame compared to other hits that were out around this time. |

The difference being that this time around it was a woman asserting her own sexuality and singing about having sex... or lack thereof. I know this is not part of this topic, but once again, further proof that airplay should have never been a component of the official U.S. singles chart. Many singles that sold reasonably well still flopped because radio refused to play them. |

"Kiss Me Deadly" peaked at #13 in Radio & Records, so I wouldn't say "radio refused to play it." That's not bad for a fairly hard rock song on a pop station. Here's what the higher 12 songs were the week that it peaked:
1 Together Forever - Rick Astley 2 One More Try - George Michael 3 Foolish Beat - Debbie Gibson 4 Dirty Diana - Michael Jackson 5 Make It Real - Jets 6 The Valley Road - Bruce Hornsby & The Range 7 The Flame - Cheap Trick 8 Circle In The Sand - Belinda Carlisle 9 Everything Your Heart Desires - Hall & Oates 10 Mercedes Boy - Pebbles 11 Alphabet St. - Prince 12 New Sensation - INXS |

It peaked at No. 12 on the Hot 100. This is a song that should have been a Top 5 hit, it was extremely poppy and dancey, and it was one of the many sounds of 1988. It's shocking that it didn't hit the Top 10, while her duet with Ozzy, a song that, whether you like it or not, is not very commercial.
My educated guess is that certain radio stations didn't play it as much, and probably spun it a few times a week, if at all. I would also guess this is the reason why the label had to submit an additional Special Radio Version. Lita's new vocals were clearly pasted onto the original recording. |
