Welcome aboard! The 7" Version With Fade, as Brian notes on page 1
of this thread, is just an early fade of the 3" CD single version you just
acquired. It fades about 20 seconds sooner.

i should have clarified, i'm sorry....i already have the "7" version w/fade" from
the german 3" cd single. it runs 5:06 (20 seconds shorter than the us full 7"
version"). but even at 5:06 i'm sure this was too long for radio. i was just
wondering if anyone remembered if there were any edits. or perhaps a dj
promo?

My promo single, Sire 7-27539-DJ-A has a 7" version with
fade on one side (listed time 5:06), and a 7" remix/edit
on the other (listed time 5:41).

I don't remember seeing a shorter version of this...5
minutes wasn't overly long in 1989, and a superstar act
like Madonna could get away with it, much as Elton John
did in the mid-ish 70s.

Where I was working at the time we played both versions
interchangeably.

The album version of "Ray Of Light" ran 5:19. The radio
edit ran 4:34 and is readily available.

It's called the Q-Sound edit, and it sounds like an
early fade from 4:20-4:30.

Is that correct, Brian and Aaron?

"die another day" is actually a slight remix. can anyone tell what the
differences are? i always thought the radio edit was just a simple edit....?

The radio edit removes her laugh and spoken "I need to lay down" vocal before the final chorus.
