It was my understanding that Varese had used the only tape source they were able to find, which was off of a Liberty LP compilation, i believe...so if that one also happened to start life as a disc dub, then I doubt that the original tape would ever turn up. Not to mention that the original tape would've been full of splices and scotch tape, as was Dickie's way of putting a break-in record together, and likely unplayable today anyhow.
Anyone who knows me, knows the one I am after from a tape source is his Diamond label hit, Ben Crazy. |

Yes, that's true. However, "Flying Saucer" and "Mr. Jaws" appear to be FULLY from vinyl on all CD issues. Even the "radio announcer" parts have telltale vinyl crackles in them. Edited by Brian W. |

It's too bad in this digital age we live in that someone couldn't take Dickie's vocal parts (if available) and edit in the song snippets matching the 45's.

Well, they did. That's what the common version out there is... Goodman's vocal parts from the vinyl source and the "drop-ins" newly mastered from tape sources. But it doesn't quite sound the same, and Inglot got one or two drop-ins wrong. |

In my humble opinion, "The Flying Saucer" sounds better on the Collectables 45 (which has the original drop-ins) than on the Varese CD.

I have the two Dickie Goodman CDs on Hot Productions (I can't remember as they are tucked away in a closet but I think they are called "Greatest Fables")
Do these Hot Production CDs contain the original versions and what are their source? They always sounded pretty good to me but my ears would never dare challenge anyones from this message board. Edited by Fetta |

Their source was scratchy, worn-out records, cleaned up a bit.

Eight years and seven days later...
Just reporting that the 45 is mono (confirmed with a needledrop that I did), and the LP version is stereo (confirmed with someone else's needledrop). The vocal parts are panned a little weird, but the opening music and some of the music samples are clearly in stereo, especially the rerecorded "Please Mr. Please" and "Rhinestone Cowboy". It may be that those are the only parts in stereo. I didn't pick this one apart in too much detail. The Rhino CD with the LP version is mixed to hard mono. |

There's a lot of crap on the radio, but there's only one Crap From The Past.
