I couldn't find a thread of its own to discuss this song but if anyone can help me clarify the following much appreciated:

There is a 3:56 promo version. I never heard this promo version on the radio in 1985. It has a long instrumental running 39 seconds.

There is a 4:08 commercial 45 version. This is the version I heard back then.

There is a 5:01 LP version. Never head this either and has a different 1 min 47 second intro compared to the promo version.

There is a 5:42 12'' Mix (Extended version) which I never heard either and contains different vocal elements at 2:53-4:07 not on any other version.

There is a 3:15 European version that is just simply an edit of the 3:56 without the instrumental in the front.

So did anyone else hear the 3:56 promo version on the radio or was the 4:08 commercial version was the "hit" version back then that got most of the airplay?

ETA: So if I'm reading the database correctly, the tuning up was the US promo version running (3:52), while I'm guessing the stock 45 was the other version I
described. Can someone confirm, and if so, which version are we getting on the new 80s disc?

Yes, that's correct. The version with the orchestra at the beginning was
only on a promo 45 in the US. The new CD has the correct stock 45
version.

Yeah, the stock 45 version has the unique intro, which instrumentally sounds similar to the rest of the song -- and includes the chorus right before the first verse. That's what they used for this CD. (It sounds great, by the way.) I've been looking for a good-sounding 45 version for a long time, as my needle drop was sub par.

I can't speak to the radio promo, but the LP version found on the Chess soundtrack has a somewhat lengthy orchestral intro. The intro ends with a flourish right into the first verse. I must say, I don't recall my radio market playing anything other than the commercial 45 version back in the spring of '85.

EDIT: Heh...Aaron beat me to it, and more concisely too. It's really such a pity to be looking at the board, not looking at the city.

From a collector's standpoint, anyone know where the
edits are in the LP version to create the 3:52 promo
edit?

It cannot be done. The intro of the promo 45 version is mixed differently and has some unique audio not found on the LP version.

Aaron is correct. I prefer the 45 version. Though if you want a nice orchestral ramp up in anticipation, this would be your go to version! It's on a 1985 Canadian CD:

The above is a summary of what's in the Eric V/A comp thread.

To partially answer Rich's question, I remember hearing American Top 40 play the orchestral intro on at least one or two occasions, but I don't remember if they played the promo version or the full LP version.

Just trying to be accurate. I just don't see a radio station playing that long opening instrumental then. Especially when the 45 is only about 10 seconds longer....

The version running 3:56 with the orchestral opening and
whose lyrics start with the first verse was the
commercial 45 version in Canada, the UK, and (to the best
of my knowledge) in every country other than the US.
(It's the version I heard on Canadian radio.)

The 4:08 and 3:56 versions appear back to back on the US
promo 45, but the labels are reversed. The side with the
stated run time of 4:05 with no mention of the London
Symphony Orchestra and described on the label as "U.S.
Radio Edit" actually plays the international commercial
45 version (running 3:56 and with the orchestral
opening); and the side with the stated run time of 3:54,
that states "Introduction by London Symphony Orchestra
Conducted by Anders Eljas", and is described as "Original
European Hit" actually plays the US commercial 45 version
running 4:08 with no London Symphony Orchestra anywhere
to be found.

Except for the words "Original European Hit", the US
commercial 45 label copies the incorrect information from
the US promo 45. It gives the run time as 3:54 and has
the "Introduction by London Symphony Orchestra Conducted
by Anders Eljas" credit, but it actually plays 4:08 and
does not feature the LSO.

So the label on my Canadian and US commercial 45s give
the same information, but in the case of the Canadian 45
the information is correct, but in the case of the US 45
it is not.

I decided to go with the 4:08 45 version in this instance as the hit version. The opening on the promo 45 is why. I just wanted to see if my memory of hearing the 45 version and not the promo was correct...

You've got those swapped; the 3:15 version is on a US promo 12". The other one is on European releases.

Technically, they were both issued in the US. I forgot about the 3:15 edit on the promo 12". The US 7" promo has the orchestral intro version on one side, which was also the stock version in every other country.
