was that the version used in the video? it's been so many years I can't remember, but I know the video began with a wedding scene coming out of a church, and I think it may have been just the bells playing.

The "bells and thunder" intro is indeed the one on "Eighties Complete", 1997, EMI Music Australia, No. 7243 8 56761 2 3. It may be pricey - it's 90 tracks on 5 CDs, with one entire CD dedicated to Australian artists. (Models! Divinyls! Swingers! 1927!) It appears to be mastered fairly well, without excessive compression/maximizing.
Total time of track is 3:38. The only place on vinyl that I'd seen this version is on a promo 12"; I can't confirm on any commercial US releases. My Naked Eyes CDs, LP, and 45 are all the "drums" intro. Edited by crapfromthepast |

Just a note, that the Eighties Complete 5 disc set was sort of repackaged with some track changes and rereleased as "Complete Eightes". I've seen it in Virgin Record stores in New York City and I got it off amazon marketplace new for 13 bux, and it still has the beatless opening version of Naked Eyes. As a treat for me, it also has the ORIGINAL mix of "Tarzan Boy" by Baltimora, which I happened to ask about on the board ages ago...this version is very different than the hit version from the US.

I guess I'll hold onto my vinyl "Naked Eyes" album.
It has the chimes intro. I wonder if radio was serviced with both versions? Back in the old days when we played carts the version we had was the drums version from a company called Far West. They supplied radio with tape services of gold tunes. Before CD libraries. I feel really old saying that! |

How is the sound quality of "Jellybean 12" Mix" on the "Everything And More" compilation--is it overly compressed/maximized? I have a mint vinyl 12" copy of this mix so the CD would have to be really good to motivate me to track it down.
Speaking of the "Jellybean 12" Mix", WLOL in Minneapolis used to play an edit of this version in the 80s. Was there an official edit or was this just a homemade version? Edited by 995wlol |

It sounds good to me, but I've never analyzed it in Cool Edit. It might be maximized, but if so, it's certainly not to the point of distortion. It's also from the master tapes. I haven't listened to that CD in quite some time, but as I recall, the label incorrectly labels it as the Mansfield 12" mix, when in fact, it's the Jellybean 12" mix.

In Dec. 2012 the UK label Cherry Red released an expanded
version of the Burning Bridges LP (that was the name of the duo’s debut album in England). The CD has a total of 18 tracks (including six bonus cuts). This reissue uses the original “no drums” intro version of “Always Something There To Remind Me” (also know as the “chimes” intro or the “bells and thunder” intro). Track 14 is the American remix (also known as the Jellybean 12” mix) that runs (5:42) and ends cold. Sadly, the Tony Mansfield 12" mix was not included. |
