Ed:

I too wonder sometimes if the reason some 45 versions are faded early on CD is because of mastering engineers referencing an incorrect run time printed on the 45 label.

In this case, I'd say it's more likely that it was faded out three seconds early because there was some audible tape hiss at the end of the track. That's pretty standard on CDs, especially on older CDs.

underground dub....can you please tell me what the differences are because they sound identical to me.....
Is it possible that you two have different 45 RPM pressings? One could have the album version, and the other a remixed, shorter version. This sort of thing happened all the time...

Bringing this topic up again as my 45 of "Treat Me Right" is not the remixed version found on "Greatest Hits" Capitol 78858 which is a slight remix. My version of "Treat Me Right" is a dj Chrysalis 2487, matrix number CHS-2487-AS-circle 1 and seems to be the same as every other cd appearance but "Greatest Hits".

The ORIGINAL vinyl LP version of "We Live for Love" was a much more dance/new wave sounding mix without all the guitar riffs. It was swapped out pretty quickly for the guitar mix, and sadly has never appeared on CD. it's the version I much prefer over the version that was edited down for the single. I guess because Heartbreaker was such a hard rock song, they were concerned about releasing a follow-up single with no hard guitar licks in it. Chrysalis records seemed to like pulling that replacement mix game, because they did the same thing with Heart of Glass on the Parallel Lines LP, eventually replacing the original cut with the near 6 minute 'disco version'.

Didn't Epic do that with Off the Wall by Jacko? Was it "Rock With You"? I have never heard another version of that song. Is it easy to find?

I have two copies of "We Live for Love" on the "Heat of the Night" Album. Was the original mix the one with dribbly sounding guitar all the way through, and less front guitar and drum rolls prior to the verses? (hard to describe, but I like it the best). The replacement was very raunchy, and they used that on the 45 too.
Cheers,

Yes Jody, that's the one. The popular mix with the 'raunchy' guitar even behind the verses was the replacement version. The original mix has that more pulsing sound, almost like a horse gallop rhythm. It's even mentioned in the liner notes of I think the synchronistic wanderings compilation, and when I read the actual reference to it, I was like, "so why didn't you include that obscure version on here???"

It always surprises me when I hear of albums with a different mix of a track inserted. I know about the self-titled "Heart" album from 1985 and also the Pointer Sisters "Break Out" from 1984, but wouldn't that mean cutting brand new laquers for the whole album - they can't just replace a track that way can they?

Sorry...don't know much about how they actually press vinyl...seen a couple of quick 5-min pieces on it and that's all!

They would have to create a new laquer for each side that had a changed track.

Was the Whitney Houston debut album a similar situation with "Greatest Love Of All"? I know on the CD version they replaced this song with the 45 version in later pressings, but I'm not sure about the vinyl. I bought the vinyl album very early in 1986 and it had the LP version of "Greatest Love".

they also replaced the original mix of Heart of Glass with the 5:50 "Disco mix" on Blondie's Parallel Lines. What I never understood about the Pointer Sisters release was, to release the album with I'm So Excited on it, they had to remove one of the other songs originally on the album! I can't even remember what it was called, but I'm just shocked that it wasn't included as a bonus track on the CD release.
