According to the database, the original CD pressings of Patsy Cline's 12 Greatest Hits with her Top 40 hits in mono and the remastered pressings with the hits in stereo both show a catalog number of MCA 12. I'm looking to pick up a copy of the former, but is there any way to tell for certain which pressing is which?

I don't have my copies handy to check, but the remastered version
from 2003 has a green cover with a picture of Patsy in a gold dress in the middle (it replicates the original LP cover). The old mono cd has a picture of Patsy in western attire. There was also a gold disc version but I don't recall the cover of that one. Also note that the remaster features remixes of all songs except "Back in Baby's Arms.". The remixes were done by Bob Ludwig and are quite faithful to the originals. |

Right. This should be the mono CD, Todd:
![]() And don't forget to check your local library for these things. I recently found the old MFSL Gold CD of Simon & Garfunkel's "Bookends" album at my local library. You never know what out-of-print CDs you're going to find there. Edited by Brian W. |

Thanks for the info, Roscoe and Brian. However, do all pressings of the 12 Greatest Hits CD with Cline wearing the western attire (as shown in Brian's post) run in mono? I ask because I've listened to audio clip samples of tracks supposedly from that CD on Amazon and All Music Guide, but they're in stereo.
It also strikes me as odd that the Greatest Hits CD with the green cover shares the same catalog number as the aforementioned 12 Greatest Hits disc, yet each contains a different track listing. |

Actually, my copy of the old mono CD does contain the original hit version of "Walking After Midnight". The remaster uses the stereo remake as did the LP version of 12 Greatest Hits. |

I double-checked, and I was mistaken, Paul. The mono "Greatest Hits" CD does have the hit version of "Walkin' After Midnight." Thanks for pointing that out, Roscoe.

Thanks, guys. But what I'm mainly wanting to be certain of is that the 12 Greatest Hits CD as pictured above has always contained the mono mixes and wasn't later remastered and reissued using the stereo mixes as substitutes. The sample audio clips I've listened from this CD on Amazon and All Music Guide all appear to be in stereo which is only adding to my confusion. Should I assume Amazon and AMG have uploaded the wrong audio samples and just go ahead and buy the disc expecting to get the mono mixes? (I already have the stereo mixes on CD, by the way.)

I understand your question now but, unfortunately, don't have any info on whether there was a "secret" remaster of the older CD version of 12 Greatest Hits that substituted stereo versions. I suspect that it's just a mistake on Amazon and AMG, but likely there's no way to find out without purchasing. I did pull out my copy (which was purchased about 4 years ago from an Amazon seller), but there's nothing distinguishing about the matrix number (MCAD-12) on either the cover or the disc itself. One thing I never noticed, though, is that "Faded Love" is stereo on this disc while everything else is mono. Since they obviously did not use the original LP tape to create this disc, I suspect that they pulled whatever individual song masters or transfers were handy. Another option for you, if you are looking for mono versions, are the old CD releases of 2 of the studio albums released during Cline's lifetime: Showcase (MCAD-87) and Sentimentally Yours (MCAD-90). Those discs are both mono and contain several of Cline's big hits ("Crazy", "I Fall To Pieces", "She's Got You") and many of the same mid-charters that are found on 12 Greatest Hits. |

Well, there are no samples for the 1988 US pressing on Amazon. The only ones that have sound samples with that cover art are the ones that say "Import," "Eco Packaging," and "Gold CD." Those may not be the right versions. If you order a used copy of the 1988 CD (link below), you should be safe. You can get one for 49 cents: http://www.amazon.com/12-Greatest-Hits-Patsy-Cline/dp/B0009G Z7Q2/ref=sr_1_8?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1302457563&sr=1-8 |
