I have two versions of this song from the promo single,
labelled the "AC Mix" and the "LP Edit." Both of my files are exactly the same and run 4:08. Can someone check their promo to see if this is indeed the case, or perhaps I have a mis-labelled version? Thanks! |

Here are the promo CD single details:
DPRO# 04426 1. Single Version (listed 4:08; actual 4:09) 2. LP Version (listed 5:16; actual 5:17) DPRO# 04436 1. AC Mix (listed 4:08; actual 4:09) 2. LP Edit (listed 4:08; actual 4:10) I'll report back any differences I hear after doing a quick A/B comparison. |

I gotta say, I'm having a very tough time picking out any differences between the AC Mix and the LP Edit. There is only one tiny (and I mean very tiny) difference that I can hear. At 1:40, under the line "without a warning," there is an electric guitar strum that blends in with the other guitars on the LP Edit. This electric guitar is either removed or very low on the AC Mix. I cannot find any other spots in the entire song that have electric guitar, and other than that, the mixes sound the same.

So I ran a null test for the two tracks on the 1989 promo CD single:
Richard Marx - Angelia [AC Mix] {Track 1 from promo CD single EMI DPRO 04436} Richard Marx - Angelia [LP Edit] {Track 2 from promo CD single EMI DPRO 04436} Unless something's wrong with my files, the two versions are digitally identical. Couldn't be any more same than they are. The two files I have really are digitally identical, without any difference in length, or in the digital zeroes at the beginning or end. This is unusual; there's usually a very small difference in length. If someone with the promo CD single wants to send a fresh rip of the two files, I'll gladly repeat the null test. I have a version labeled as "45 edit" from TM Century, which appears to be the same as the above two, although it wasn't a digital clone and I didn't spend much time with it. |

Ron, I can't get my two files to cancel completely, and they don't stay perfectly in sync.

Turns out that whoever sent me the two files initially, sent me the same file twice. No big deal.
Aaron sent me the two proper files, and they're still comically close. Both stay synchronized really closely until about 3:24, then they diverge from each other, but only very slightly. I managed to find one teensy difference. At 3:48, the drum fills are different, as if the AC Mix and LP Edit used different portions of the end of the song. I don't know the LP version well enough to tell which is which, though. I'd guess that whoever created the second of the two versions to match the first of the two versions didn't know the LP version well enough, either, and used the wrong portion of the song. The song runs at 96.9 BPM throughout, and uses a live drummer, not a drum machine. For what it's worth. |

Good catch on the different edit near the end. I certainly didn't spot it when doing my A/B, but I also didn't try to sync the two files. I can get them to partially cancel out for a couple seconds, and there definitely is an electric guitar strum at 1:40 on the LP Edit that appears to be missing from the AC Mix.

I never could figure out the late-'80s mindset of multiple versions of the songs for radio.
Did they really think that radio airplay would hinge on having a second version that's just a teeny bit different? Was there really someone at EMI in 1989 who thought, "Whoa! That guitar strum at 1:40 will ruin chances for airplay! Get the engineer to mix that out!" Just like cutting out 4.4 seconds from the bridge of Huey Lewis's "I Know What I Like" - did Chrysalis see that extra 4.4 seconds as a deal-breaker? It all gave way to a flood of multiple-mix promo and commercial CD singles in the late-'80s and early '90s, which caused endless headaches for us collectors and DJs. I'm fine with "Album Version", and a shorter "Single Version" that got the airplay, but I lose patience wading through another six versions that have never been listened to in their entirety by anyone, ever. |
