Ron, your library notes have helped so many of us locate
and purchase what we need to get the true and best sounding 45 and LP versions and edits. |

Ron,
For Whitney Houston's It's Not Right It's Okay I can tell you that the TM Century radio edit you list is not the "hit version" that was played on radio in 1999. The "hit version" is the Thunderpuss 2000 Radio Mix which got extensive airplay in New York and other markets. From 1999 to about 2003 the "remix" sometimes was the hit version. It happens with Tamia's Stranger In My House as well as other Top 10 singles, even 2000's Amber Sexual. Hope that helps. For reference here is the youtube video of the "hit version" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cLsIHZvySw Edited by PopArchivist |

For these directories, I use Top Hits USA's files or TM Century's files to determine what to label as the "hit version".
I don't doubt that NY radio played that remix, but I can't keep track of what was played on which stations in which markets. There have been instances of different versions being played in different markets going all the way back to Amy Grant's "Baby Baby". Or Sting's "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free". Or even "The Safety Dance". To make my life simpler, I just list what the radio-servicing company (or companies) thought the hit was. Edited by crapfromthepast |

Labeling something a "hit version" in this era is misleading. Unlike 1985 or 1991 numerous markets played numerous versions. Just because its from TM Century does not make it a hit version. As for the Safety Dance I never heard the short version that is on every comp only the one where they spell it out. That example is out of context for the 1999-2009 period as numerous remixes got airplay. Sometimes they overtook the regular single version. Just as an example in 1999 I Still Believe by Mariah Carey I heard the Morales Club Mix Edit. I also heard the slow version. I am just saying labeling something a "hit version" is a misnomer when applied to later 90's and early 2000's hits. Better you leave off the labels of "hit version" from 1999 onward as many mixes/edits got airplay. Picking one over the other is a fruitless endeavor as I see it. |

I respectfully disagree; I believe that there's value in having one mix, out of five or ten different mixes, that's labeled "hit". If I'm going to play the song now, 20+ years after it was popular, I'm going to reach for the version that was the "hit". And if I don't know offhand which was the most popular at the time (and that's true for just about everything after 1995 or so in these folders), I'm going to reach for what was sent to radio at the time. I've made it clear where the "hit" designation comes from, so there isn't any ambiguity.
I'm not going to cover the 2000's in these folders, so there won't be any issues with those years. I'll be revisiting 1998, 1997, and so forth, until I reach the 1960s. |

Thanks again for all your work on this. I tap out in the mid 90s or so. I use
your listings mainly to know what song maybe had an edit or remix that I didn’t know about and see if have it. A lot of times Discogs does not list songs on comps or whatever that are edits or remixes, usually it’s just the song length. When I rip my CDs that info doesn’t always come over either. So I sometimes use your lists to check to see what I have for any particular song. |
