    Posted: 06 October 2006 at 8:07am
I was in my car last night listening to WLTW (Lite FM) in New York and they played a version of "Killing Me Softly" by the Fugees that I never heard before.

During the first chorus when Lauren Hill sings

"Strumming my pain with his fingers,
Singing my life with his words,"

every version that I have ever heard contains Wycelf following those lyrics with "One Time"

But this version did not. It sounded as if they edited the acapella intro of the song into its place and just added a beat behind it, thus eliminating the "One Time" lyric by Wyclef.

Does anyone know what I am talking about and has anyone heard this? Also, does anyone know where this version exists and if it is available anywhere.

Thanks.

Fetta

Fetta,

The Kiss-FM station in Dallas plays this version, although I've never heard it anywhere else. Based on the way it is edited (horribly), and the fact that both Kiss in Dallas and Lite FM in NY are Clear Channel stations, I would have to guess that it is a Clear Channel edit that both stations received from the "central library."

I have seen two US promo singles for this song, although I don't own either one. The promo CD we played when it was a hit was a one-track "Radio Edit" CD, which had the (4:04) edit. This edit removes the spoken part between the acapella intro and first verse (the part where they're just talking when the beat first kicks in), and it fades a little earlier than the LP.

The other promo I've seen had four tracks, with the lead track being the "LP Version w/out Intro" (I think) and the second track the "LP Version w/Intro." I believe it also had the instrumental, but I'm not sure what the fourth track was. Again, I'm just going from memory on this promo.

In any case, you're right about them taking the acapella intro and putting a beat behind it for the choruses. Personally, I think it sounds awful, because the acapella intro is not sung to the rhythm of the rest of the song. It just sounds "off" to me.

Don't understand why they even made this type of edit.   It seems as if they thought the "one time" lyric was just too much for a lite radio station.

Seems funny to me.

It's beyond me, too. I suppose they were trying to cut out any part of the song that could be considered "rap," but they really butchered it. The other reason that leads me to believe this is NOT a record company edit is the fact that Columbia could have simply pulled up the master tape and removed Wyclef's vocal from the mix, which would have been far easier than mixing the acapella intro over the instrumental.

Just found some info on the second promo CD, which is actually a 5-track single, although one of the tracks is "Fu-Gee-La," their first single from The Score. This is from an online website, so I don't know how accurate it is:

Killing Me Softly promo CD
CSK7847
1. LP version with intro
2. LP version without intro
3. Sound Barrier Remix
4. "Fu-Gee-La" (clean LP version)
5. LP Instrumental

If you're wondering the difference between the LP version with and without the intro, essentially the "intro" is referring to the short part before the actual track on the CD The Score. It has some Jamaican guy chanting over Lauren Hill's vocal--kind of an in-between-tracks segment on the full-length album that falls at the end of track 7 before "Killing Me Softly" starts on track 8.

The import CD single that I own of "Killing Me Softly" has the "LP version w/out Intro," and it is simply the entire LP version (track 8), but faded before the skit at the end starts.

Slightly off topic, but Magic 106.7 in Boston makes some strange custom edits as well:

"To Love Somebody" Michael Bolton. Completely snipped the last chorus because it was a little overwrought for their taste.

"Beautiful" Christina Aguilera. See above.

"Iris" Goo Goo Dolls and "To Love You More" Celine Dion both received wretched short edits of the album version when there were perfectly acceptable radio edits available.

It might be possible that they didn't have the official radio edits, and they figured they would just make their own instead of trying to track down the real ones.

That edit was made by Jhani Kayne, former PD of KOST Los Angeles. It was made to fit the sound of KOST better and is in the master Clear Channel libarary. No need to track it down. It was made by looping the beat of the song, and then placing the accapella intro part over that beat to replace the rap sections in the hook.

I just picked up the CSK 7847 Promo single (5 track mentioned above) hoping it had the "radio edit" but am happy to report I love the "Sound Barrier Remix." Very cool mix I never heard before and to get the clean version of "Fu-Gee-La" was an added bonus. I just dropped $200 bucks on some promo singles and it was well worth my money. I feel like a kid in the candy store. I didn't mind dropping it because I would have spent it on gasoline a few months ago and I'm sure we're heading back so I treated myself for once!
