On the Ronnie Dyson DJ single "(If You Let Me Make Love To You Then) Why Can't I Touch You", the mono and stereo sides match up until about 3:00. Then they don't completely match, and on the last chorus on the fade out, the mono version is a completely different take than the stereo version.
It's kind of obvious because on the stereo version during the fade out Ronnie sings "why - why can't I touch you". No repeated "why" on the mono fade out. The Rhino "Soul Hits of the 70's" volume 3 features the version on the stereo DJ side, the double "why" version, which is probably also the stock 45 version as I think it was only issued in srereo on 45. |

As always, the "fine-tooth-comb" analysis that you provide for your new 45 acquisitions is appreciated, Bill. Because of your new findings, I have now pulled out my promo 45, for "further action".

I just listened to a 1970 AT40 show on XM and they played "Why Can't I Touch You" - this version with the alternate lead vocal! I completely forgot about this post, and as I was listening I noticed a completely different vocal at 3:14 on the word "if" - instead of sliding down over 3 notes, Ronnie slides UP over 4 different notes. Jim, did you take that further action after pulling out your promo 45, and does it indeed have a different "if" at 3:14 of the mono version? Bill, does your promo have that? I assume that's what I heard today. I assume that the LP version is the same as the commercial 45 version, but is it possible it was longer, with this adlib, and the mono 45 side was edited to have this later portion?

I caught that too!
The promo single is somewhere in storage (complete with radio station cue burn!) I look forward to the early AT40 shows for just that purpose. |

I have an early-'70s pressing, promo-stickered Columbia Hall Of Fame reissue 45 (33202) which is mono, and is identical to the mono side of the DJ 45 with the different ending from 3:14 on. Its matrix number is ZSP 152978 (compared to ZSS 152976 on my stereo stock copy.)
Both the stereo and mono 45s run 3:24, but the mono is just a hair faster-pitched, and fades by about the same amount later than the stereo 45. |

Yes the description above matches my mono DJ side. Columbia/Epic did have a habit of issuing songs in the early 70's as stereo singles, then using the mono DJ sides for the Hall of Fame re-issue series, which was odd.

This practice was most likely done when the original metal stampers were worn out. Cheaper than having to cut new lacquers and get plating work done.

Just wanted to bring up this thread once more since the database hasn't yet been updated with the mono DJ version and commercial single info for Ronnie Dyson's "(If You Let Me Make Love to You Then) Why Can't I Touch You?".
By the way, were all the original 1970 commercial 45 copies in stereo? Edited by Todd Ireland |
