According to the database, CD run times for Destiny's Child's "Survivor" range all over the place from 3:48 to 4:13. We know the CD/LP version runs 4:13, but where do the shorter versions/lengths come from? I think there may have been a commercial maxi-CD single release for the song but, if my memory serves me, it consisted of a bunch of remixes. Does a regular domestic commercial single release exist? Also, does anyone have a promo CD single release who can pass along the disc's contents?

Hmm, I don't recall anything but a maxi-single in the U.S., either.

But there was a U.S. 45. It lists the A-side as (apparently) the album version, running 4:14, with the B-side being a remix featuring Da Brat, running a listed 4:24:

Todd, my copy is from RPM Top Hits U.S.A. It is non-descriptive, runs 4:00 and ends with a vocal cold.

I believe this is one of several tracks that was edited specifically for Destiny's Child #1's compilation.

It's possible the shorter run time originates from that release.

The song runs 3:48 on two CDs and yet runs 3:59-4:00 on a couple of other discs. Are these shorter lengths the result of early fades? Edits? Different mixes?

If it helps, the digital copy on Napster is labeled as the #1's Edit and runs 3:48. I think Underground Dub may be on to something regarding special edits for that CD.

My U.S. promo CD has the following tracks (all times are stated times):

1. Album Version (4:01)
2. Instrumental (3:56)
3. A Cappella (3:37)

The first track runs 4:00 and is as eriejwg describes. It is clearly not the "Album Version" as claimed, since according to the database the song runs 4:13 on the Survivor CD. The album was not actually released until May 2001, two months after the song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100.

Thanks, Paul, John, and Dub for your input. On the surface, it looks like CD appearances running 4:13 consist of the 45 and LP version/length, while CDs with a 3:59-4:00 run time feature the DJ edit (or DJ length if it's an early fade of the 4:13 length... I don't have the latter to compare). This all still needs to be 100% verified, however. And unless there's evidence to the contrary, a "neither the 45 nor LP version" notation should accompany CDs containing the 3:48 version.

Tood, ealier in this thread Brian kindly provided us with a scan of his listed (4:14) U.S. commercial 45, so shouldn't we use that as the official "45 baseline", my friend?

Yes, Jim, I do agree that the vinyl 45 release should count as a "45 version" even though vinyl 45s were selling in such miniscule numbers in 2001 when "Survivor" was a hit.

I've gone back and revised the comments of my previous post accordingly.
