The actual commercial 45 run time for Genesis' "Misunderstanding" is 3:08, not 3:04 as stated on the record label. (This info comes courtesy of Jim a.k.a. "jimct".) Currently, all of the song's CDs in the database run 3:10 to 3:12. Therefore, I'm wondering if the LP length runs slightly longer than the 45. Does anyone have Genesis' vinyl LP Duke from 1980 on Atlantic who can pass along the run time for "Misunderstanding"?

Appreciate the detailed info from you and Jim, Todd. Is there a way of indicating whether the time discrepancy on this and your other 1980 songs is due to speed/early fades?

Good question, John. I presently don't have a copy of the vinyl 45 to check against, but I'll be more than happy to report back with the results as soon as I do.

I've always had a hunch that the single is slightly faster than the LP version. This is because the version of the song on one of the K-Tel albums (I think it's "Full Tilt") is sped up from the what's on the "Duke" album. Could it be that the original 45 version is sped up too?

I have a feeling you may be right, RichM921. I've always thought "Misunderstanding" on Genesis' Duke CD sounded slower than how I've heard it on the radio.

my commercial 45 issued as atlantic 3662 states a run time on the label as 3:04 but actully runs 3:08 and is slightly sped up versus the version on the "hits" cd (approximately 0:04 difference)....

More details in case you want to try this at home:

LP version from my Duke CD: printed time 3:11, actual time 3:12, actual tempo 80.8 BPM throughout (*)

Single version from Atlantic 3662 (commercially available) 45: printed time 3:04, actual time 3:08 or 3:09, actual tempo 82.4 BPM throughout (*)

So if you want to create the single, speed up the LP version by exactly 2.0%. The mix and fade points are identical in both versions.

(*) When Genesis was making a lot of their early '80s records, the track would start off with Phil Collins programming a drum machine, to get a good feel for the tempo. The rest of the instruments were added over the drum machine, and Phil would record his drums last, replacing the drum machine. Neat technique. An artifact of this technique is that the BPM is perfectly constant throughout the song, so my BPM numbers above are actually meaningful, and don't have the usual human drift that comes from not using a metronome or click track.
