In a span of just 3 years, Rihanna has accumulated 11 top 40 hits, 9 of which made top 10, 6 top 3 and 4 #1's. Spending her second week at #1 with her fourth chart topper ("Disturbia"), I thought it was time for a look back.

Here's a list of her top 40 hits, their peaks, hit versions and actual lengths.

Hmm, I didn't know Rihanna had joined the exclusive club of artists with 20 or more top ten hits. Beyonce has not achieved that yet.

Off the top of my head, the only other female solo artists to amass 20 or more top ten singles (using only the Billboard singles sales charts prior to the Hot 100) are Madonna, Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, and, believe it or not, Dinah Shore! For female groups, I think it's the Supremes and The Andrews Sisters, and that's it.

I know, it's pretty crazy.

Also, she is in extremely good chart company having secured 11 #1 singles. She's just surpassed Stevie Wonder and Janet Jackson and is currently "tied" with Whitney Houston. Once she achieves her next chart topper, she'll match The Supremes and Madonna's total of 12. Then it's off to Michael Jackson's 13.

Full list:

    The Beatles (20)
    Mariah Carey (18)
    Elvis Presley (17)
    Michael Jackson (13)
    Madonna (12)
    The Supremes (12)
    Whitney Houston (11)
    Rihanna (11)
    Janet Jackson (10)
    Stevie Wonder (10)

Rihanna just secured her 12th #1 single with "Diamonds"!

She just released her 7th album as well.

Not sure if it has appeared on CD, but the actual run time for this version, simply labeled as "Remix," runs 3:39. I'm pretty sure this is the only version that was released to radio, and I can't imagine them playing the 1:20 LP version. My copy comes from TM Studios Prime Cuts series, and it is clearly an mp3 source (lossy).

The only version of "Birthday Cake" that has been commercially released (either physically or digitally) is the 1:18 version on the Talk That Talk album. This is not the hit version. (Chris Brown does not appear on it.)

Earlier this year, her label started to promote to radio stations and clubs the much longer "Remix" featuring Chris Brown to which Aaron refers. Because of the history between the two artists, however, there was a considerable negative reaction to it. As a result, Rihanna's label decided not to commercially release it in any form. Many radio stations, however, did play it. I doubt that more than a handful of stations, if any, played the original 1:18 version.

For the first few weeks of its chart run, the Hot 100 showed the artist as "Rihanna". Starting with the chart of April 7, however, the artist credit was shown as "Rihanna Featuring Chris Brown". If you look on iTunes, you'll see a lot of angry comments from people who mistakenly purchased the 1:18 version, believing they were actually purchasing the version with Chris Brown they were hearing on the radio (which is almost three times as long).

So what we have here is the unusual situation of a hit song of which only a 1:18 snippet has ever been commercially released.

The odd thing is that Rihanna's new album, released five days ago, does contain another track featuring Chris Brown.
