At a high end audio show in Detroit held by Audiokarma
several years ago I seen a 78 RPM set up that blew my mind. I cannot say what any of the equipment was. I just know that it produced incredible sound. Only listening and not looking it I would find it hard to guess it was 78 RPM. I previously never heard anything even close to this before from a 78 RPM. I remember the fellow running the set up told me it was important tuo s=use the correct stylus(needle) and to have a real clean record. There is a YouTube Channel - the 78Prof - that has tons of great sounding 78s |

While not digital, I am telling you that you will never hear anything like this set:
Glenn Miller - Swing For The Jukebox From one of the reviews: "What Rollofone have done is honorable, bold and daring more than any major or minor record company with the metal masters or licensing to loan them out: re-releasing ten studio recordings on their original format, the ten-inch 78 rpm phonograph record. The sound is very, very good and in the cases of some songs, like “American Patrol”, possibly the best available in any format. For this, Rollofone deserves much credit for, concerning the fact that they’re a small company with limited resources and their process, unlike the vast majority today, was entirely analogue." Anothe reviewer said: " I have all these songs on a cds and records. Before playing each side in this set, I listened to the best version in my collections. This set has best sound and has the most details preserved of any I own. This set brings out details lost in other releases. On my sound system, it out shines the Doug Pomeroy CDs." Sadly, the set did not sell well at all, likely due to a combination of a small company with little to no promotional budget, a large pricetag, and a lack of understanding of what went into its production... and there was an issue with the Miller estate itself, with Miller's daughter finally approving the endeavor. A final, personal, sad note for me is one of the engineers, Mark Cederquist, who raved about his time on this project, has passed away and so the skills he developed transferring these recordings have likely been lost to the ages. If you can afford it, THIS is the Glenn Miller collection you want. It might be worth mentioning that while they do not have the license to sell these recordings on CD, they are "charging to make copies of your records" if you purchase the vinyl and will include a CD for $20 production fee. </COMMERCIAL> |

I'd love to have it, but I can't justify paying $156 for ten songs. |

While I'm no expert on the Swing era, I do have a strong interest in the
early '50s pre-rock era. I've been impressed by the compilations I've received from Collectors Choice Music. Be aware that a lot of their songs are needle drops. I know there are differing opinions on those. Personally I would rather have a good needle drop of an original hit version than a better sounding later recording. Authenticity beats sound quality if I had to choose one over the other. |

Re:CEDER
I not like the sound on anything I've ever heard in which it was used. Of course that may be partly explainable as it's rarely used on anything that has good sound quality in the first place. |
