paul,
i just reposted the below question on the board. does the song "try again" actually come as a commercial 45?.....i've never seen one...i've only seen a jukebox only one.....please check the record research vaults if there is indeed one....i've never seen one and my hunch is that it NEVER was issued as a commercial 45 and ONLY released as a 12" and i believe the 12" was issued with a different catalog umber as follows blackground 7087-6-14962-1-5 edtop40 Edited by edtop40 |

Ed, I know you directed your question at a different Paul, but....
In the early 1990s, Capitol-EMI (for some reason) started printing the words 'FOR JUKEBOXES ONLY' on all its 7-inch singles. I have always considered these to be commercial 45s, as I always purchased them in the 1990s from the same sources as 45s from other labels. (They are definitely not promos.) My 45 has 'Try Again' as the A-side. |

According to what I've heard from a couple of sources, Capitol-EMI themselves stopped doing 45s altogether around early-mid 1990. After about a year, their distribution arm (CEMA) made a deal with them to distribute the "for jukeboxes only" series which began in early '92 (the demand for 45s was tested by some regular Capitol-EMI releases in late '91). I think they put this on the labels to distinguish them from regular Capitol releases that came before them. Edited by torcan |

Yes, Ed, our 45 states "For Jukeboxs Only". I really don't consider these 45s to be "promo". In fact, we were able to buy them at the time from our usual commercial wholesaler. In almost every case, these were the only 45s available for those titles. Edited by Paul Haney |

All database CD appearances of Aaliyah's "Try Again" currently contain either an "LP version" or "radio edit" comment. Has anyone checked a copy of the "for jukebox only" 45 to determine the run time? If it clocks in at 4:03, then the lone CD containing the "radio edit" comment should probably be changed to "45 version" for better accuracy. On the other hand, if the 45 runs 4:44 and is the same as the LP, then I would submit that all "LP version" comments for the song's CD entries should be removed since the 45 and LP would be identical.

Well, like I said in a previous post, the jukebox 45 was actually a 45 for "Come Back In One Piece," and "Try Again" was the B-side. So I don't know if that would technically be considered the 45 version. |

My U.S. 7-inch single lists "Try Again" as the "A"-side and runs 4:03 (give or take a second or two). I don't have the CD listed in the database as containing the "radio edit", but the same version is on the fifth volume of the Canadian version of the Now! series.

Thanks for the info, Paul! I very vividly recall when "Try Again" earned the distinction for becoming the first song ever to go to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 without a commercial single release. (Prior to December 5, 1998, a song was only eligible to chart if it was available at retail on a physical single format.) Evidently, the jukebox 45 came out months after the song had peaked.

Huh. I assumed "Try Again" was the B-side because its flip was released AFTER "Try Again" was. |

I just obtained a second promo CD for "Try Again." It's a factory-pressed
disc with front and back inserts and artwork. It has the following versions: 1. No Timbaland Version (listed 3:27; actual 3:26) 2. LP Version (listed 4:05; actual 4:04) 3. Call Out Hook My old top 40 station used to play this "No Timbaland Version," which is essentially the instrumental up until Aaliyah's vocals, and then the song is faded out before the ending "rap" part by Timbaland. This is not a unique "mix" that completely removes Timbaland throughout. He can still be heard doing some brief "uhh"s and beat-boxing type sounds. |
