Although not noted in the database, my original Mainstream mono stock 45 is definitely a shorter "journey". There are two edits on the intro which are not heard on any CD issue of this song. I'm assuming the CD issues are the LP version and if so, should be noted as such.
Also my 45 has a listed time of 3:11 but a run time of 3:15. Edited by Bill Cahill |

Bill, yes, the CD version is the same as the stereo LP version. I'd bought the Journey To The Center Of The Mind LP before the 45 turned up in the cut-outs. The first of Pat's books I bought noted a "bad dropout from 2:25-2:28" on the first Rhino Nuggets CD, so out of curiosity, I put on the CD. And I couldn't hear any dropout.
Then it occured to me that Pat may have interpreted where the lead guitar pans from the left channel, to the right (at a bit lower volume) and then back to the left as a dropout. I don't think it is; that's the way it appeared on the vinyl stereo LP. It sounded cool under headphones back in the day. When folded to mono, like on the original 45, the level difference of the guitar panning is not apparent; hence it may appear to be a dropout upon hearing the stereo LP track in stereo in comparison to the same spot on the mono 45. Mainstream also released a single of the unedited stereo LP version in the '70s using the same 45 catalog number (Mainstream 684) on the newer multi-colored label. Edited by Yah Shure |

my commercial 45 issued as mainstream 684 states the run time as 3:11 but actually runs 3:15 and is an edit of the full length 3:33 cd/lp version.....thanks john for making an excellent edit.....

I know the Amboy Dukes' "Journey to the Center of the Mind" commercial 45 was issued in mono, but I've been meaning to ask if a 45 version can be successfully replicated from the LP version in stereo. I gather then from John's attempt at a homemade 45 edit that this can indeed be done?

Todd, it's close, but when I summed the stereo to mono as an experiment on my own, it didn't seem to have the same punch as the mono 45.. Have Ed send you the edit I did in stereo and see what you think.

I have another question regarding "Journey to the Center of the Mind" that can certainly be filed under the "minutia" category... All of the song's database CD appearances to date consist of the LP version. On the various artists CD Nuggets (Rhino 75892), I can hear two distinct drumstick taps prior to the song's intro. However, the drumstick taps do not precede the song on the Garage Rock compilation (Varese Sarabande 302066565) nor the Nuggets box set (Rhino 75466).
Yah Shure (or anyone else who can answer this question), are there drumstick taps preceding the song on the parent vinyl LP? Edited by Todd Ireland |

Todd, no, there are no taps on the vinyl LP. I wouldn't hold out a lot of hope for getting the mono 45 version of "Journey" on CD, since the band's cover of "Baby Please Don't Go" was one of the few tracks on the original 1972 Nuggets Elektra LP to be represented by the longer LP track (in stereo) rather than the edited mono 45. (2:35 erroneously listed time on the Elektra LP jacket, 5:32 on the label itself.) |

I just pulled my copy of Nuggets (Rhino 75892) and there are no drumstick taps that precede the intro. I feel I've been robbed! The only identifier on the inner ring are the numbers 364. I bought this CD around 1988 - 89. MM |
