Just received the new "Best Of Poison" cd and on the cd jacket, the track "I Won't Forget You" is listed as the 45 version. When comparing this version to the LP version found on "Look What The Cat Dragged In" I cannot detect any difference. Does anyone have a better handle on the 45 vs LP distinction?

does the liner notes say who the remix credits go to....the 45 is a distinctive different mix than the cd/lp the song was issued on.....are you saying you can't hear a difference between the new cd's version of the song and the 45 or you can't hear the difference between the original cd/lp version and the 45???
i'll have to go pick this new cd tomorrow and check the accuracy of the "single mix" description in allmusic.com Edited by edtop40 |

I am saying I can't hear the difference between the original LP/cd and the 45. Yes I do hear some difference in EQ but I assume that is due to the mastering that was used for cd's 20 years ago versus today's mastering.

i just listened to the version from the new best of cd and to my ears it doesn't sound the same..........to points of reference.....the intro guitar lick has a noticibly different sound.....the guitar sounds buzzier on the 45 and flat on the cd..........also at the 1:35 mark there is a guitar buzz which i cannot hear on the new cd version...........anyone else have any observations....

The notes that I wrote and slipped inside the 45 of "I Won't Forget You" indicate the vinyl 45 brings out background vocals that are barely audible on the LP "Look What The Cat Dragged In". Listen at 1:36 - 1:37 on the vinyl 45 and also 2:00-2:02. These background vocals are not brought out in the new "Best Of Poison" cd.

I listened to the mp3s that were passed along, and I'll agree that there is a difference between the 45 & LP versions. I don't hear any difference in background vocals, though. The only differences I can hear are the guitar parts that Ed points out. For example, there's a guitar lick right around 1:37 that's much louder on the 45 (right before the line "although miles come between us"). Also on the "miles come between us" part, there's a difference in the guitar in the background. The LP version has an electric guitar at this part, while the 45 is using some other kind of guitar.

OK I have listened again to the 45, the cd "Look What The Cat Dragged In" and the cd "Best Of". What I hear on both of the cd's is a guitar introduction that sounds like there are 2 guitars playing, while on the 45 I hear only 1 guitar playing.

Pat thanks for the MP3s. It's clear that the 45 is a unique mix. The 1:37 guitar punch that is up front on the 45 is the dead giveaway. Aaron you are on the money on that. The 45 also ran slower on the MP3 I had.
As far as any difference between the Cat Dragged and Best Of, that's a tough one. "Best Of" could be a slight remix, or a mix similar to the LP version that was mislabled, or maybe the group had an earlier version of a 45 on Enigma and not Capitol? Or, it could simply be that Capitol for "Best Of" used a stereo expander and compressed it. I don't hear any significant difference between the Cat Dragged and Best of Version except in EQ, compression and possibly reverb. The reverb could have been brought up by stereo expansion and compression. Or, like I said, it's a mix very close to the LP version that was mislabeled. - Bill |
