I checked the commercial 45 of "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" today (Epic 03368), and I verified that it is (3:33). Contrary to what it says in Top 40 Music On CD, commercial copies run (3:33) and not (4:23).
For those of you who wish to have this version on CD, it's one simple edit of the 4:23 version. The section from 3:12 to 3:58 is edited out, with the edit point right before the word "make" in both places. If you're using the version from "At Worst: The Best Of Culture Club" you'll also have to cut off the dialog at the beginning and pitch it up 1.3% to match the 45. Happy splicing! |

aaron.....i have the commercial 45 released in 1982 on epic 03368 and it contains the 4:23 version and NOT the 3:33 version.....i've compared it to the version on the cd "at worst the best of culture club" and it is identical........does your copy have etched into the vinyl any writing stating it is an edit version........mine does not........i've had a discussion with the moderator regarding this same kind of issue with the 45 "hysteria" by def leppard.......i conclude that the cd version and the 45 version are the same.......

Good question, edtop40. The label says Epic 03368, but I'm not sure about the etching on the vinyl. I listened to it at a friend's house, so the 45 isn't mine. I will check it again the next time I'm over there. I did look on the label to see if there was any indication of "promo" or "demonstration-not for sale." I did not see anything. But this may very well be a DJ copy of the 45.

aaronk:
If the label on your friend's 45 copy is white, then it's a pretty good bet that he has a DJ issue. |

Nope, it's the standard dark blue Epic label, and it has a different song on the b-side (not just the same song repeated like many DJ 45s).

I wanted to revive this thread, because I am still under the belief that two commercial 45s exist. The (3:33) edit that my friend has is NOT a promo 45. Does anyone else have the (3:33) edit on a commercial copy?
It wouldn't surprise me, given that Tom Petty was recently discovered having two commercial releases for "Don't Come Around Here..." Another example on the Epic label is Teena Marie's "Lovergirl" which was released commercially in two different MIXES, but with no indication on the label. |

Ed: When you say your commercial 45 of "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" is identical to the version on Boy George & Culture Club's At Worst: The Best of CD, does this mean your 45 contains the "popularity breeds contempt" spoken intro? |

Thanks to Jim for helping out on this one, here's the info on the 3:10 and 2:50 edits.
- On the 3:10 edit, you simply take the 3:33 edit (mentioned above), but NOT pitched up, and cut from (0:19) to where the two synth/drum hits are. - On the 2:50 edit, you can start with either the 3:33 or 3:10 edit (not pitched up) and chop off the intro completely (starts with the two synth/drum hits). |
