I have the 12" (I purchased it in 2001 on Blackground Records) The catalog number is 7-2438-38722-1 3 (T-38722). The same number is etched on to the lead-out section on the vinyl itself (with an "A" at the end.) |

The database currently shows DJ CD single info for Aaliyah's "Try Again"... It might be also helpful to note that commercial 45 copies run 4:03, while the lone database CD containing the "radio edit" comment should probably be changed to "45 version" for better accuracy.

Todd, you yourself stated previously "I very vividly recall when "Try Again" earned the distinction for becoming the first song ever to go to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 without a commercial single release. (Prior to December 5, 1998, a song was only eligible to chart if it was available at retail on a physical single format.) Evidently, the jukebox 45 came out months after the song had peaked".
So if the vinyl 45 was issued after the song had peaked does this really qualify as being a 45 version? |

If I'm not mistaken, the commercial 45 did eventually get released while "Try Again" was still on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, though admittedly it was very late in the song's chart run, long after it had reached its peak in popularity. By then, the commercial 45 sales were negligible and had no real measurable impact on the song's chart performance.
So your point is well-taken, Pat... After further thought, I now tend to agree that no changes in the database are really warranted in this instance. |

Oh, boy, I realize I'm probably tiptoeing around a land mine by even daring to resurrect this thread again...
It's been more than a decade since I last opined on this topic. But now that I'm revisiting it hopefully for the very last time, I'm having a change of heart regarding the conclusion I made back in 2013. Currently, all CD entries for Aaliyah's "Try Again" have either an "LP version" or "radio edit" comment. Whenever I see an "LP version" comment, however, I typically automatically assume that there's also a "45 version" counterpart available. Otherwise, what's the point in even having the "LP version" comment to begin with, right? And since we've previously documented that there was no commercial single release for "Try Again" until very late into the song's chart run, we came to a consensus agreement that this should be classified as an airplay-only hit with no "official" 45 version. With all this said, may I make a motion then to request that the existing "LP version" comments in the database for "Try Again" be removed to help prevent other fellow database subscribers from going on any further wild goose chases in search of an official 45 version that technically doesn't exist? :-D (The lone "radio edit" comment, of course, should remain in place and will likely remind subscribers that that was the version they heard on Top 40 radio almost nonstop at least a thousand times back in the day!) |
