Gentlemen, thank you for clearing that up for me. Been driving me crazy. I had the original "Juice" album way back in '81 and that is where I know that original album version from! It's disappointing that both of the re-issues of the "Juice" album on CD that I have don't include the original version of The Sweetest Thing. It's a very pretty song in either version, though. :)

Good info, Kent. So all 45 version appearances in the database then can also be said to be on some LP pressings as well. And, man, what a powerful soaring voice Juice had! |

Indeed, love Juice Newton's voice. She had some pipes.

This string is awesome. "Angel of the Morning" was my favorite song when it was out (my last semester in high school) and because everyone else was into hard rock, I kept quiet about it. Never thought I'd see a running commentary on how great Juice is/was. :-) There was just something about her voice that really resonated with me. I loved every one of her singles through her career. Richard Landis was a perfect producer for her - he brought out the best in her voice and surrounded her with very sympathetic productions.

Hey everyone, I came across a cool release featuring three of Juice's early 80's albums on CD that apparently sound better than what has been released before.....
http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B005CHZVM8/ref=oh_details_o0 1_s00_i00 The reviewer who bought it said: "This two-CD compilation is the FINEST of the high-quality Juice Newton albums available. And it's at an alarmingly low price. Win-win! The set combines the early-1980s platinum albums "Juice" and "Quiet Lies" (on the first disc) and 1983's moderately successful "Dirty Looks" (the second disk). These tracks are beautifully re-mastered, deftly using 24-bit technology. I have heard every re-mastered edition of Juice Newton's music, and to my ears this set is the BEST so far. The sound quality is OUTSTANDING Fans of the #1 hit "The Sweetest Thing (I've Ever Known)" will be happy to know the version included here is the super-rare 1981 country version, which was released only on very early pressings of the "Juice" album before being replaced with the slicker pop version that was the radio hit. Prior to this collection, this lovely version of the song (which features a slightly different vocal and a petal steel guitar instead of the oboe heard in the pop version) was available on CD only on an import called "Country Classics," which wasn't re-mastered, so this refreshed version is an extra-special treat." I ordered a copy of this and it's on the way. If any of you have wanted the original version of The Sweetest Thing, just let me know! |

Thanks for passing along this information, Dale! I have to say though that whenever I see an Amazon reviewer rave about the sound quality on a modern day CD release, I can't help but wonder if these CDs were simply mastered with the typically LOUD and highly compressed audio levels that lead some listeners into thinking they're hearing "outstanding" sound. (I realize this kind of mastering might sound good to some, but not to those of us who prefer a more fully intact dynamic range.)
Have you received your copy of the Juice Newton 2-CD import set yet, Dale? If so, can you please report your opinion of the sound quality? Edited by Todd Ireland |

Dale, there's an early version of "The Sweetest Thing" that's been released on many Juice Newton CDs - it was the first version she recorded - in the late '70s (possibly under the moniker "Juice Newton & Silver Spur"). I've never heard of THREE versions of this song, but is that what you're saying? Are you saying this alternate version is different from the early version on a number of CDs?

Todd, when I get it, I'll send you the track. I am a fail at determining what sounds good! Often, all of these different "re-masters" sound the same to me! |

The first version was on Juice and Silver Spur's first album from 1975. She re-recorded it with a much larger, slicker arrangement on her Juice album from 1981. The version on that was a little more "country" sounding than what later became the single version. Are you confused yet? LOL! |

Given the rarity of the original LP version of "The Sweetest Thing (I've Ever Known)" on CD, I'll probably still purchase the 2-disc import set regardless. But you're certainly welcome to send me a copy of the track for evaluation purposes after you get your CD, Dale. Just send me a private message and I'll provide my e-mail address.
