to whom it may concern
the database needs a revision on this one the 45 issued as emi america 8087 is an edit of the 4:51 full cd/lp version....... the first vocals on the 45 are at the 0:18 mark while on the cd/lp version it is at the 0:35 mark the CORRECT note on all the entries for this song should be "lp version" and not "lp length" edtop40 |

What is the actual run time of your "Draw of the Cards" 45? |

Thanks, Ed. That was a cool tune to try to replicate (never got the airplay it deserved--although you try following up a 9-week number one single). And my edit clocked in at (4:06)--although Ed's dub had about seven seconds of space at the beginning, so it ran (4:13) when he sent it to me. Edited by sriv94 |

Just picked up an Australian import CD called "Edge of the 80s: Movers and Shakers" put out by TIme Life. I guess these are their version of Sounds Of The 80s but the track listings are very different.
Anyhow, "Draw of The Cards" was one of the tracks and it clocks in at 4:05 and has the vocal starting at the :18 mark as Ed mentioned above. I don't have a 45 to compare it to but I am assuming it is the 45. Just an FYI for those who are looking for this on a CD. Anyone interested in a copy, please ping me. |

This may the creepiest-sounding waltz ever to hit the charts! It seems to be in 3/4 time - count the beats as ONE-two-three ONE-two-three... It runs about 90.7 BPM throughout.
I like the song a lot, but I can certainly see how it baffled radio programmers in 1981, who expected another "Bette Davis Eyes". The 45 is an edit of the LP version. If you want to replicate the edit, *don't* use the Crazy In The Night cheapie collection from 1990 as your source; it uses noise reduction and has all the life sucked out of it. Much better is an 8-CD European set from Disky called More Greatest Hits Of The '80s (2000), which does not have any noise reduction. I recreated the 45 edit using this disc as the source. Here are editing instructions. Segment 1: 6 beats long. Extends from 0:00 to 0:04.4 of both the LP and 45 versions. Remove the 12 beats from 0:04.4 to 0:12.4 of the LP version. Segment 2: 18 beats long. Extends from 0:04.4 to 0:16.3 of the 45 edit. Extends from 0:12.4 to 0:24.3 of the LP version. Remove the 12 beats from 0:24.3 to 0:32.2 of the LP version. Segment 3: 144 beats long. Extends from 0:16.3 to 1:51.5 of the 45 edit. Extends from 0:32.2 to 2:07.3 of the LP version. Remove the 18 beats from 2:07.3 to 2:19.2 of the LP version. Segment 4: 201 beats long. Begins with a snare hit that falls on a downbeat. The transition between segments 3 and 4 sounds a little weird, but that's what's on the 45. Extends from 1:51.5 to 4:04.7 of the 45 edit. Extends from 2:19.2 to 4:32.4 of the LP version. The fade of the LP version has a really long tail. The 45 shortens up the tail. Add a 21-beat fade. The fade extends from 3:50.7 to 4:04.7 of the 45 edit. The fade extends from 4:18.5 to 4:32.4 of the LP version. Your mixdown will run 4:04.7, with edits at 0:04.4, 0:16.3 and 1:51.5. |

There's a lot of crap on the radio, but there's only one Crap From The Past.

To Crapfromthepast:
Creepy, but excellent record. I could be mistaken, but I would think the time signature of this cut would be 6/8 instead of waltz (3/4) time. (Only Dave Brubeck would've known for sure...) Andy |

Andy - You're probably right. My formal musical training petered out before I got comfortable with anything other than 4/4. |

Question on the end of the 2nd segment: does the trill
stay with that segment, and run to the keyboard note starting the 3rd segment, do you edit before the trill, or do you get a little of the ending note of the trill before you jump to the 3rd segment? I made the edit at the end of the trill right before it lands on the final note, and it sounds OK, but I don't know what the 45 does there and I'd like to be accurate. EDIT: Based on this video, it sounds like you edit before the trill. Edited by NightAire |
